The Point: Sign on to Defend the First Amendment

So where’s that executive order on religious freedom?

Executive orders dominated the news during President Trump’s first weeks in office. The elimination of overseas funding for abortions, cutting government regulations, the temporary immigration ban, etc.

One executive order that didn’t make the news was on protecting religious freedom. That’s because, although a draft of the order was produced, the president didn’t sign it.

And that’s a pity. Because, as reported by Christianity Today, the order stated that “Persons and organizations do not forfeit their religious freedom when providing social services, education, or healthcare; earning a living, seeking a job, or employing others; receiving government grants or contracts.”

Amen to that. Now I can’t tell you why, in the end, President Trump decided against issuing the order. But as Rod Dreher pointed out, he did promise to sign a First Amendment Protection Act if Congress passed one. So, Congress. How ’bout it?

Please write or call your congressmen and Senators. Urge them to pass the First Amendment Defense Act.
