It was a bad joke-turned great example.

After the midterms, Saturday Night Live comedian Pete Davidson made a terrible decision to mock the appearance of some of the winners, including Lieutenant Commander Dan Crenshaw, who was just elected to Congress from Texas. Davidson mocked Crenshaw’s eye patch, which he wears since losing his eye to an IED explosion in Afghanistan. And this just before Veteran’s Day!

To their credit, Davidson and SNL realized they had crossed a line, and invited Crenshaw on the show where Davidson issued a direct and articulate apology on-air. Crenshaw was then able to get in a few jabs to settle the score, before remarking that “Americans can forgive one another. We can remember what brings us together as a country and still see the good in each other.”

Let me just say, more of this, please. While I can’t recommend you start watching Saturday Night Live, I’m grateful that as nasty as politics in this country has become, asking for and receiving forgiveness—even for bad jokes—is still possible.
