The Point: Body Shame

Here’s another reason God matters.

According to The University of Melbourne, children as young as eight experience “body shame.” In other words, they’re embarrassed by their physical appearance and wish they were different. Eight years old!

It’s terrible, but hardly unexpected. On one hand, they’re bombarded nonstop with impossible, airbrushed images. On the other hand, the “body positivity movement” overcorrects and bombards them with positive thoughts.

Both sides miss the main point: beauty doesn’t determine value. A beauty and fashion industry confused about what it means to be human will only be plagued by consumerism and hypocrisy.

God made our bodies and every other aspect of our beings. He says we’re fearfully and wonderfully made, and that our bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit. The best response to body shame is to teach future generations who they are, made in the image of God, and responsible to steward it.
