The Point: An Unplanned R-Rating

“Unplanned,” the soon-to-be released movie about Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood director turned pro-life advocate, has been rated R by the Motion Picture Association of America—much to the surprise of the film’s makers. There is no nudity or profanity in the film. “Unplanned” got its R-rating because it shows the violence of abortion. There’s an irony here not lost on the directors of the film. They noted that a teenage girl needs parental permission to watch a movie about abortion, but in some states, not to have an actual abortion. But surprisingly enough, the movie’s makers aren’t really that upset. They told Movieguide, “Maybe it’s for the best.” “…every mother of a teenage girl needs to take her by the hand and go see (the film) with her.” As far as they are concerned, “R means ‘Recommended.” And, in a way, the MPAA has correctly identified what abortion truly is: an extreme act of violence.
