Last month the world lost a fearless evangelist. Known simply as “Brother Andrew,” he was responsible for smuggling thousands of Bibles into the Soviet Union. He faced threats of capture, torture, prison, and execution with a simple creed: “The Bible is full of ordinary people who went to impossible places and did wondrous things simply because they decided to follow Jesus.”
In a story made famous by his 1967 book God’s Smuggler, Brother Andrew described a scene at the Romanian border, where in a Volkswagen packed with Bibles, he watched police searching cars for up to an hour at a time, dismantling seats and hubcaps looking for contraband.
Brother Andrew prayed: “Lord… When you were on earth, You made blind eyes see. Now, I pray, make seeing eyes blind.” He was waved through with just a glance at his passport.
Brother Andrew is a reminder of how God works in extraordinary ways using ordinary people.
