The Point: The Situation at the Border . . . Both/And
Seriously, we can and must say both things.
Here are two statements about our current situation at the border. They’re not contradictory. First: Families should not be separated. Second: The media coverage of this issue is hypocritical.
Also: We need to tighten security at our border. And yet, I can say without any hesitation that we need to treat genuine asylum seekers differently than we treat thieves and gang members.
I think it’s fair to say that many—not all—Trump critics, and many—not all—Trump defenders, are more interested in scoring political points than doing the right thing.
Jeff Sessions’s use of Romans 13 was really bad proof texting, and CNN’s and NPR’s sudden interest in Scripture is really bad proof texting, and also somewhat laughable.
Lastly, parents shouldn’t break the law with their children. And children shouldn’t be punished for their parents breaking the law.
It’s not all or nothing, folks. We’re going to have to walk and chew gum at the same time.
