The Point: Mother or Pregnant Person?

This is loss-of-touch with reality. For the Colson Center for Christian Worldview, I’m John Stonestreet with The Point.

If there’s a human relationship more basic than the relationship of mother and child, I don’t know it. Having a mother is universal. But in this age of sexual chaos, even this is being decried as too exclusive.

New guidelines from the 160,000-member British Medical Association urge doctors to refer to expectant mothers as “pregnant people,” to “celebrate diversity” and not alienate members of the transgender community.

The new guidelines come with a 14-page booklet entitled, “A Guide to Effective Communication: Inclusive Language in the Workplace.”

How can excluding the most basic and cherished title in human society be “inclusive?” And how many so-called “pregnant men” are there in Britain? Well, one—who is a biological woman! In other words, a mother.

Folks, words matter. No matter what our profession, we ought to simply refuse this kind of language. If motherhood isn’t safe from political correctness, nothing is.
