Recently, the FDA approved a brain-implanted computer chip, developed by Elon Musk’s company Neuralink, for human trials. The chip, called the Link, embeds on the brain’s surface and sends electrical signals to an external computer. Musk says he hopes the invention will enable patients to control computer actions like using a mouse, a keyboard, or even texting with their thoughts.  

Musk believes his new technology will be especially helpful for individuals with disabilities like paralysis or even allowing the blind to see or the mute to communicate.  

As “mind-blowing” as technology can be, it should also remind us of the tension and the temptations of living in the “already not yet” place between redemption and restoration. Technology, when rightly used, is restorative. It helps us overcome some effects of the Fall. However, even our best technologies cannot save the world, fix the human condition, or usher in a utopian age. We must always keep distinct humans made in God’s image from technologies made by humans.
