A Texas court ruling, expected to go into effect today, temporarily revoked FDA approval for the abortion drug Mifepristone. A U.S. district judge wrote that the FDA approved the drug too quickly back in 2000 and didn’t ensure the drug was safe. On Wednesday, a federal appeals court blocked the decision yet kept restrictions on access by mail.
Mifepristone is not safe. The drug starves preborn children of the progesterone they need to grow. Once the child has died, a second medication induces premature labor.
Mifepristone also comes with risks for mothers. Nevertheless, chemical abortions now account for the majority of abortions committed in America each year. Abortion advocates and drug companies, who have strong financial interest in keeping the prescriptions flowing, are outraged at any restrictions. The CEO of Planned Parenthood Arizona told reporters last week, “We knew that anti-abortion activists and politicians would not stop at overturning Roe.”
Hopefully, she’s right. Prescription abortions are the new front in the fight to protect life.
