Last Wednesday, days after the shooting of Jacob Blake and amidst riots in Kenosha Wisconsin, Bishop Garland Hunt articulated, as well as anyone I’ve heard, the desperate need for the Church to be the Church right now. Leading our weekly prayer time, which takes place each Wednesday morning until the day after the election, Hunt identified racism and racial conflict as something only the Church can really wage battle against.

These “spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places” require prayer and, especially, repentance…for our lack of care for others, our unwillingness to speak out, for the rampant unforgiveness, and for our failure to love unconditionally.

Only the Church, he said, has the ability to respond to racism and racial conflict: through the oneness for which Jesus prayed in John 17.
