Across the country, states have banned elective surgeries in order to preserve resources for coronavirus victims and reduce risk of exposure and transmission.

Of course, each state determines what is medically necessary and what is not. Texas, for example, joined Ohio, Alabama, and Louisiana in adding almost all abortions to the list of medically unnecessary procedures for the duration of the pandemic.

In Ohio, some abortion clinics responded by announcing plans to ignore Governor DeWine’s directive and perform abortions anyway, something that also seems to be happening in Louisiana, while the Texas attorney general stated that “those who violate the governor’s order will be met with the full force of the law.” Then federal judges blocked the orders in Texas, Alabama, and Ohio.
